When attempting to locate your heart muscle, most people place their hands on the left side of their chest. Actually, your heart is located in the center of your chest between your lungs. The bottom of the heart is tipped to the left, so you feel more of your heart on your left side of your chest.

Hold out your hand and make a fist. If you’re a child, your heart is about the same size as your fist and if you’re an adult, it’s about the same size as two fists.

An adult woman’s heart weighs about 8 ounces and a man’s about 10 ounces.

Your heart beats about 100,000 times a day, about 3.6 million times a year. During an average lifetime, the human heart will beat more than 2.5 billion times.

Your system of blood vessels consisting of arteries, veins and capillaries is over 60,000 miles long. That’s long enough to go more than twice around the world.

Your body has about 6 quarts of blood circulating through the body three times every minute. In one day the blood travels a total of 12,000 miles which is roughly four times the distance across the United States from coast to coast.

Your blood pressure is a measure of the pressure exerted by the circulating blood upon the walls of the blood vessels. Systolic (top number) is a measure of the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats (when the heart muscle contracts) and diastolic (bottom number) is a measure of the pressure in the arteries between the heart beats (when the heart muscle is resting between beats).
