Dear Auten Road Parents/Guardians,

Back-to-school night is an important tradition marking the beginning of the new school year. On this night, your child's teachers will explain the goals of their class and for your child. Additionally, teachers will share information about their teaching style and methodology, grading policy, and the requirements for a successful year. Back-to-School night is an exciting time and I hope you plan to join us!

For your planning, Back-to-School Night this year is as follows:

Grade 5 - Thursday, September 21

Grade 6 – Thursday, September 28

PARKING. Please utilize both the front and rear parking lots, as well as any space along the side and front driveways.

OPEN HOUSE. To begin the evening, you are invited to participate in our Open House from 5:30-6:40 p.m. During our Open House, you will have an opportunity to speak with teachers in the following subject area teachers:

  • Art

  • General Music

  • Health-Physical Education

  • Intervention

  • Speech

  • Wilson

  • World Languages

Please Note: A representative(s) from the Hillsborough Township Board of Education will also be on hand from 5:30 - 6:40 p.m. (in our Atrium) to answer questions pertaining to the upcoming Referendum in November.

Following our Open House, there will be a brief welcome message from myself and our Home and School President at 6:45 p.m. in our cafeteria. The presentation will conclude at 7:05 p.m. and everyone will make their way to their child’s homeroom. It is important for you to know your child’s homeroom teacher and/or classroom number. You will receive your child’s schedule in homeroom. On the next page please find a detailed summary of the evening’s events, including times and locations.

RECOMMENDATIONS. Everyone is usually a little nervous this evening.  However, keeping in mind the following should help ease any anxiety that you may be feeling and help to make your experience more productive:

  • Introduce yourself and who your child is.

  • Take notes. Important: Audio/Video recording of teacher presentations is not permitted.

  • Try not to ask specific questions about your child. Instead, focus on asking questions that you have about the curriculum, homework, and grading. Asking questions specifically about your child won't be useful to other parents. It's better to make an appointment for a conference to discuss your concerns one-on-one.

  • Be ready to volunteer. There will be opportunities to sign up for school-wide activities through our Home and School Association. You will be better prepared if you have already given some thought to availability and how you would like to contribute to the school community.

NO CHILDREN, PLEASE. Back-to-School Night is a unique school program that is designed for adults. Although we recognize that arranging for childcare is challenging, we strongly believe that our parents/guardians should be free to focus on meeting their child’s teacher and listening to each presentation. As a result, we respectfully ask that students and siblings do not attend Back-to-School Night.

On behalf of the entire staff at Auten Road Intermediate School we thank you in advance for taking an active role in your child’s education and we look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,

Christopher Carey, Ed.D.
