For each of the On-demand writing, the students will have a choice of three prompts from which to select and craft their response within a 40 minute writing period. Throughout the year, all of the On-demand writing samples will be scored using "The Writing Pathways Narrative Writing Rubric" published by Teacher's College of Columbia University. All of the teachers have received training and have worked to calibrate their scoring. The Writing Pathways Narrative Rubric consists of three main categories; structure, development and language conventions. These areas are further divided into nine criterion; overall, leads, transitions, endings, organization, elaboration, craft, spelling and punctuation. The overall score is averaged out of a total of four. We are looking for all children to show growth in areas of need. Please note, that all children develop at their own individual pace, and will have multiple opportunities to practice and further strengthen their writing skills via quick writes, exit tickets, journal entries and process writing.
