Appeals process for both mathematics and literacy.
MATHEMATICS
We strive to place every student in a course that balances rigorous challenges with the support necessary for long-term success. However, if you believe there has been a clerical error or that your child’s current placement does not accurately reflect their mathematical proficiency, we provide a formal Appeals Process.
Before You Appeal
To ensure a productive transition, it is vital that both students and parents understand the specific rigor and workload associated with our different tracks. Before submitting an appeal, please carefully review the Hillsborough Middle School Placement Expectations Guide.
Successful appeals typically demonstrate:
Consistency in high-level performance across all assessments.
Mastery of foundational concepts required for the requested level.
Strong independent work habits and mathematical persistence.

LITERACY
Placement decisions are based on a review of specific scores on common assessments, iReady assessment and NJSLA scores. Literacy grades are reviewed but are not considered unless a student is on the cusp. Teacher input is sought as well. Complete this Google Form by June 11, 2026.
